NEO Team Update 3-12-20

A Firm Foundation

These are challenging days as our world is dealing with the pandemic of Covid–19. Our churches are considering changes in our worship services, social gatherings and even our sacraments out of concern for the well-being of our parishioners and communities. Churches are contemplating how they might use technology to deliver teaching and preaching, and also to collect offerings.  Precautions are being put into place as we receive updates from our city, state and national leaders. Communication is prioritized. We are thinking about how we will respond if someone in our congregation should test positive for the virus.

In the midst of all of the anxiety and fear, which we who have received the first fruits of the Spirit also experience in varying degrees, there is opportunity for the people of God to stand out as salt and light.

Like many of you, Psalm 62 was in my Lenten reading this week.   Verse 1 and 4 are almost identical:

Find rest, o my soul, in God alone;

My hope comes from Him.

He alone is my rock and salvation;

He is my fortress, I will not be shaken.

The Psalmist reminds himself to find rest in God. That is not always our first reaction. It often comes as we recall the activity of God on our behalf in the past. Trust is fostered as we remember that God alone is, and has always been, our rock and salvation. Our hope is not in our 401(k), health or possessions; it is in God Almighty. As Jesus later taught in the Sermon on the Mount, a life built upon God and obedience to his teaching cannot be shaken.

What an opportunity to be salt as we demonstrate trust in the midst of our fears! What an opportunity to show fresh obedience as we focus not on ourselves but reach out in compassion to those who are sick physically or emotionally! Let’s keep trusting God and seeking His help and wisdom!

A New World Area

We praise our God for the sustainable and growing ministry in the Central African Republic, officially recognized this month as one of the 163 world areas in which the Church of the Nazarene works! After this new world area was confirmed, the Board of General Superintendents gathered around the globe in prayer – the same globe past general superintendents gathered around to pray for new world areas.

We are thankful for the church in Congo Brazzaville for pioneering this work and our Field Strategy Coordinator, Rev Gavin Fothergill, for his leadership.

In light of the concerns for health and safety regarding the corona virus, we have decided to postpone the NEO Skate Party scheduled for this Wednesday night.  We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.  However, we are looking at a possible new date sometime in late May or early June.  We will keep everyone updated as we know more in the weeks ahead. Thank you.

Widows and Widowers Brunch

Sapulpa had 48 in attendance for their annual Valentine’s event honoring widows and widowers, with 20 being in the honored group. Entertainment by Richard Hicks and Judy Giles was super. Food catered by Catering Connection. Broken Arrow First also enjoyed a similar ministry event.

District TNT Director, Kendall Moseley, says some events that might be worthy of consideration for local senior adult groups this Spring would be a chili cook-off and a Good Friday meal together.

We are so excited about our district Work & Witness trip to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic to build a school/compassionate outreach center!
