NEO Team Update 8-6-18

Build on Your Strengths

We’re often told in business that we should work on our weaknesses instead of our strengths, but let me tell you about Jim Kaat, who pitched many years for the Minnesota Twins. Kaat went in to talk to his new pitching coach, Johnny Sain, during spring training before the 1966 season. Sain asked Kaat to name his top four pitches and what pitches he felt he should work on the most.

Kaat said his best pitch was his fastball, followed by his curve, slider and changeup. He thought if he improved on his slider and changeup, he would have a good season.

His coach disagreed. Sain told him: “I want you to take a different approach. Work on your fastball. I know it’s your favorite pitch so go out there in practice, warm-ups and during games and concentrate on your fastball. Throw your fastball 80-90 percent of the time all year, and you’ll win a lot of ball games.”

That season, Kaat threw fastball after fastball and won 26 games to become the American League’s pitcher of the year.

All of us, including churches, have to manage our weaknesses.  But lead with your strengths!

Let’s Rejoice Together!

Reviews

We’ve had very positive Church/Pastor Reviews this summer at Audacity (Pastor Ronnie Baker), Davenport (Pastor Jordan Serracino) and Owasso Silver Creek (Pastor Brian Loderhose)! We rejoice in the continuation of these ministries.

Around 25 of our pastors received intensive training in Organic Outreach at PALCON. Huddle groups are being formed under the direction of Organic Outreach Team Leader, Scott Moore, to help churches make Organic Outreach a part of the culture of our churches.

Revivals

Collinsville and Tulsa Kaleo Churches recently had great summer revivals with Rob McCorkle as evangelist.

We are having a wonderful response as we explore use of the program, “Raising Highly Capable Kids” in Northeast Oklahoma. Ellen Crager has volunteered to serve as our team leader and we have a host of enthusiastic leaders hoping to bring this ministry to Oklahoma. We will be applying for a grant soon from Resilient Kids and will share more when a Vision meeting is planned.

Mark Smith and Mike Karnes participated in DCPI (Dynamic Church Planting International) last week in Wichita, KS.

New Pastors

We welcome new pastors Cary Tipton (Mannford) and Rick Calvert (Barnsdall). Pastor Cary and Argelia will begin ministry the week of August 19 and be installed on August 26. Pastor Rick and Sharlene will be installed on August 12.

Kidz Kamp 2018, where we learned about removing the mask and being authentic in everything we do.  Trey and Candace Brooks were our speakers and God used them to help us grow in our walk with Him.  We had 257 campers from 18 churches and God blessed us. The kidz had fun on the zip-line and in the creek.  The older kids who will be going to teen camp next year had a special late night of glow in the dark water slide time.  I want to thank the churches for caring for your kids and helping them go to Kamp.  I also want to thank the counselors and our nurse for giving your time and love to the kids.

Our NEO youth also had a great camp with guest speaker Grant McCloskey and Core worship team. God did some amazing things in the lives of teenagers. Core and Grant did fantastic leading in worship and sharing the Gospel. Thank you to all that made this week possible. Looking forward to our future events. Always love spending time with our NEO family!

Financial Resources…

The COMPASS Initiative is a program developed by the Church of the Nazarene, funded by Lilly Endowment, Inc., to address our U.S. ministers’ most pressing financial difficulties.  The program includes training programs to equip ministers in personal and church financial matters.  A Ministerial Excellence Fund provides grants for debt reduction and retirement savings to individual ministers who have completed the COMPASS Journey or the COMPASS Quest.  Courses are online.  For more information, visit www.compassinitiative.org or click here to download a COMPASS Initiative Brochure.

Cleveland Church of the Nazarene is celebrating its 100th Anniversary September 15-16, 2018!  We rejoice with you!
