NEO Team Update

NEO Team Update

We thought we were emerging from the pandemic. Now we are not so sure. And the pandemic is only one of the challenges we have faced in the last 18 months. We witnessed racial injustice, riots, political division, mixed messages from politicians and scientists, and economic collapse.

The truth is, there are a lot of things that we do not know, especially when it comes to the future of the church. Ed Stetzer writes, “I do know these are difficult days that have presented us with many challenges. On the flip side, I do believe these challenges come with great opportunities for ministry. How we seize these gospel opportunities will determine whether we emerge from this season in a state of survival or positioned for revival.”

I love that scene in the movie Apollo 13 in which they’re trying to bring back to Earth the crippled spacecraft, and the NASA director says to Chief Flight Director Gene Kranz, “This could be the worst disaster NASA’s ever experienced.” And Kranz replies, “With all due respect, sir, I believe this is going to be our finest hour.”

We may look at the past year and a half and think, This is a Disaster. But what if the challenges we face move us to lean into Christ more fully and allow his Spirit to do a lot of new things? This can be our finest hour!

I join Ed Stetzer in this prayer: “My prayer is that pastors and church leaders will courageously lead their churches to be salt for a decaying world, light for a dark world and gospel witnesses for the glory of our King.”

All NEO churches are encouraged to fully engage in A Journey of Grace in October and November. How exciting it will be to have all of us taking our faith communities through the Journey of Grace together with Sunday worship services, Bible study, children and youth groups all geared around this Journey of Grace.

District New Start Coordinator, Ronnie Baker, and three of our ministers in training and their spouses are attending Church Planter Assessment in KC this week. Pray that God will give insight and wisdom to the assessors and new vision and confidence in God’s leadership for those being assessed – Josh and Bethany Duell, Ben and Alycia Finkbeiner, Hank and Jamie Grant.

Silver Creek in Owasso is hosting revival services October 1-3. Friday and Saturday night start time is 6:30 PM, and Sunday at 10:30 AM. Our song evangelist is Pastor Jairo Maldonado. Jairo and his wife Chrissy are the worship pastors for North Point Community Church, Beaumont TX. Our evangelist is Pastor Alicia McClintic. Alicia serves as the lead pastor of Selah Church of the Nazarene in Selah, Washington and co-hosts the weekly podcast for A Plain Account, an online Wesleyan Lectionary commentary. All are welcome!

Memorial Service for Shirley McKellips

From District Superintendent, Dave McKellips: In Romans 12, the Apostle Paul says the church is a family that rejoices with those who rejoice and mourns with those who mourn. You have certainly excelled at both as I have served as your district pastor the past 15 years. Thanks for the many expressions of love and sympathy on the Sept. 4 death of my mother. God’s grace and your love are sustaining us.

We are planning a memorial service for Mom on Oct. 2, 10 am at Tulsa Central Church of the Nazarene. For those unable to attend or who prefer to avoid crowds during this pandemic, the service will be available online.

Some have asked about Memorial gifts for Mom. In lieu of flowers, the family would propose gifts to Southern Nazarene University to add Mom and Dad to the Hall of Witnesses display. Go to this website for details: SNU Hall of Witnesses.  The money given goes to the SNU Ministerial Internship Program. Gifts can be made online or by check to SNU with McKellips Memorial on the designation line.

Nazarene Students at Colleges in Oklahoma

Do you know a student who will attend an Oklahoma college/university this fall? We want your student to be connected with the local Church where they attend school. Students are looking for a place to belong and we want to reach out. Connecting with students happens most often when we can make the first step. For that to happen, we need your help. Please take a moment to share student contact information with us. Nazarene Connection Ministries Survey (
